Pre Workout Supplements
We all want to get the most out of our workouts, in order to acheive our exercise goals, but sometimes energy can be low or we lack focus. If you’re fatigued and/ or unmotivated in the gym, grinding out those reps, or pushing through the last kilometre of your 10K run will seem like torture. If you’re just going through the motions, you’re only wasting time and delaying your progress.
Enter Pre-workout Supplements. With ingredients like beta alanine, arginine, citrulline malate, and caffeine, and others, these supplements are designed to energize you and allow you to focus, to maximize your time spent exercising, enabling you to work harder, to achieve your goals in the shortest amount of time possible!
Post Workout Recovery Supplements
After you’ve finished decimating your body from intense exercise, the two most important things you can do to recover quickly (so you’re recovered and ready to go again tomorrow) are to, get good nutrition and rest.
The hour following exercise has been coined the “Golden Hour”. During this “window”, your body is looking for quick, easily digestable nutrients like whey protein (to get muscle repair going). Whey protein is a fast-absorbing protein that is most useful as a post-workout protein supplement. Second, your body is looking for fast absorbing carbohydrates to replenish muscle glycogen (sugar stored within muscle tissue). Mixing waxy maize or dextrose with your whey protein, immediately following your workout, is the prime time to get these nutrients to your muscles, to start the repair, rebuilding, and recovery process.
BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acids)
Another popular supplement that many use as part of their post workout recovery protocol, is branched chain amino acids.
There are nine essential amino acids. “Essential” meaning that the body cannot manufacture them, and so they must be consumed through food or supplements. Of the nine essential amino acids, L-Leucine, L-IsoLeucine, and L-Valine, the “branched chain amino acids”, play a critical role in muscle development and arresting muscle catabolism (the breakdown of muscle tissue), incurred during your workout.
Consider the following from the Journal of Nutrition. “These findings suggest that BCAAs may be useful for muscle recovery following exercise.”
Waxy Maize is a quick absorbing, easily digested carbohydrate. Due to it’s superior absorption, Waxy Maize can help to quickly replenish muscle glycogen stores and can also help with the absorption of other nutrients, like creating and beta alanine. The unique combination of speed of absorption and it’s ability to aid in the absorption of other nutrients, makes it ideal to including waxy maize as part of a post workout recovery protocol.
Dextrose, also known as glucose, is a high glycemic (fast absorbing) carbohydrate derived from corn, that has been used along with whey protein, for post workout recovery. Dextrose produces a very quick and powerful insulin response, which can aid in the uptake (by muscles), of protein, glucose and other nutrients, such as creatine monohydrate, arginine & beta alanine.
Regardless of your activity level, even if you are completely sedentary, your body needs protein. Protein is essential for maintaining Selecting the right protein can be a confusing choice when there are so many to choose from. Our staff here at Fuel have the knowledge to help you select the right protein, whether that be a vegan or non vegan choice.
